Memento Mori

After years of working abstractly, Sandman again took up photography, representing the human figure but not in a literal way. Sandman explored 19th century photographic processes “not to create a concrete document, but rather to create a metaphor of the spirit.” These Van Dyke Brown photograms on Arches watercolor paper represent the first project for which Sandman used found pieces of rock, coral, and lava into which she drilled holes to create human features.
