Tarps

For tarp or glyph works, Sandman abandoned pristine Belgian linen for stained, splattered drop cloths she got from “crusty old house painters who had crusty old tarps” and created monumental installations by tacking used tarp pieces directly onto walls. Thin paint and thick splatters invite comparisons to Helen Frankenthaler and Jackson Pollock, but Sandman’s tarp installations are essentially collage drawings that explore planar and volumetric relationships.
